Waldorf Fourth Graders Learn Geography Through Bike Trip

students learned about history and geography by embarking on a two-day riding trip on the newly restored Elroy-Sparta State Trail in Wisconsin. The trail, nicknamed the “Granddaddy of America鈥檚 trails,” was closed for four years due to flooding and stretches more than 100 miles between Reedsburg and Trempealeau Wisconsin.

The fourth graders rode for 32.5 miles and teacher, Sandy Loucks, said, 鈥淚f we鈥檙e going to study Wisconsin geography, we should experience it!鈥

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources completed $2.3 million worth of flood damage repairs to a 20-mile stretch of the popular route, which runs through Monroe and Juneau counties. The flood came from a foot of rain dropped into the area during an August storm in 2018. The trail was the nation鈥檚 first rail-to-trail conversion, following the route of the former Chicago and North Western railroad established in 1873.
